Morphine

The doctors told us not to worry,
he was pumped so full of morphine
there's no way he knew he was
dying as they cracked his ribs in a
final failed attempt at resuscitation. 

But just moments before, he knew
his name as he paid his Amex bill
over the phone while cracking
jokes to the two-dozen medical
professionals trying to save his life.
