Columns at Lincoln Memorial

 
I never counted
the columns before,
a total of thirty-six,
one for each state
in Lincoln’s time.

Numbers matter,
only when each one
is fairly honored. 
Columns stand solemn,
weighty as peace itself.

There are more states today,
but never forget:
the evil of one bullet
is too many.
